Susan McCarthy

Biography

I'm a journalist and author, specializing in two areas: wildlife and animal behavior; and humor. I'm the co-author, with Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson, of When Elephants Weep: The Emotional Lives of Animals, and the author of Becoming A Tiger: How Baby Animals Learn to Live in the Wild.

Nature of the Beast consists of short remarks about creatures, wildlife, and the environment, the very things about which I write articles and books. I came across some of these topics while I was researching other things. These causeries are mostly too brief or insufficiently newsy to interest editors. Yet I've got to tell somebody. (Editors, if I am wrong, and you would actually like to publish more on one of these subjects, please get in touch. Email to sumac at well.com.)
